Setting a FAVorite ICON for your site

This post is an Answer to the comment posted by Carol A Ranney on “How to make custom icons”.

A favourite icon commonly known as a favicon is the small image shown near the URL in the address field of the browser. Now a days these icons are also used for bookmarks. You can easily create one for your web site too. Here are the steps involved :

1. Create a favicon.ico file

Use the method mentioned in How to make a custom icon. Create an icon with a size of 128×128 or larger dimension which you can work easily on. Now scale it down to 16×16px. It is better to use 256 colors only. Save his as favicon.ico

2. Upload the icon

If you are the admin then upload the icon to the root directory of your web site. This is normally public_html or where the index.html file lies.

You will be able to see the icon for all the pages from your web site now.

3. Adding a <link> field

If you want to use a different icon for a particular page add

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="ICON" type="image/x-icon" />

in between the <head></head> tags of the page where icon location refers to PATH/favicon.ico the place where you saved the icon.

4. More on favicons

Most of the current browsers also support GIF files as favicons. Use the name favicon.gif if you are using one. You can use animated icons by saving the animation as a GIF file and then use it as your favicon. Firefox even supports png file to be used as favourite icon.

If you have any further doubts please feel free to comment here.

Change the default Drive Icons in Windows XP

You can change the default drive icons available in My Computer under Windows XP through the registry. Although it is done via registry the task is pretty simple and straight forward. (You can also use the Autorun method – please read that article if you prefer to do so)

Open registry editor ( WIN+R » regedit )

Navigate to the key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons

Registry allows you to change the icons associated with each drive

Here you can see some sub keys with name as drive letters in you system.

Each one of them will have another sub key DefaultIcon . The Default string under DriveIcon keyDefault string value here contains the path to the icon used for that drive. Double Click on this and set the path of the icon you want to use.

Default icons for drives in XP xhanged to Vista ones.

This will change the default icon of that drive. Repeat it for other drives also. I don’t know any easier way, but if you know just post a comment and I will publish it here and link back to your blog.

How to get icons from exe and dll files of programs

The icons that are used by programs such as Photoshop or Microsoft Office are actually stored inside the exe or dll files coming along with the program. To capture and save these icons you can use two methods. One is by using a program that can open an exe file such as PE resource explorer. The other method is simpler and uses a small program that is used only to extract icons from exe and dll files.

Icons inside photoshop.exe opened with copicone

Copicone is an amazingly small program which was created by Guillaume Ryder. It is only 9Kb in size and comes in a zipped package weighing only 4.5Kb. Copicone is free just like all the other utilities avilable at Guillaume’s web site. Just open the dll file or exe file using copycone and you can see the icons. Select the one you want to save and click Save.

Copycone is available only in French. But the limited number of buttons will allow you to easily locate the appropriate controls neede.

Download the Icon extractor – Copicone here. If you want to create your own icons for free read it here.

Download RSS icons – in different colors

This images were made by me so that somebody looking for Feed icons would be able to get all of it from a single location – so this page is Image heavy..

Last day I have been searching for some RSS feed icons that are somewhat different from the default one all of the feeders out there are using. That is I wanted something different from the default Orange 32px x 32px one used everywhere. I did some search and found nothing satisfactory but got a really big 300×300 orange button and a 150×150 orange button. I decided that no other guy should have the pain again to search for RSS buttons with colors. And that’s why I made all these and posted here. Here you’ll get all the big RSS buttons in this single gallery instead of going through the net searching. Save the ones you want, if its not here just tell me what you need and I’ll make one for you.

Right Click and select Save Image As to save these images to your computer.

These are the reflection type RSS feed icons… all 60 by 60 and 11Kb each
