This is a continuation of the series of posts about Windows © Registry.

Before you edit your be sure to Back-up it because if you make wrong changes and Windows © gets currupted you have to undo the changes by reverting to your older Registry. Here are the detailed steps to Back-Ip your Registry.

You can backup your registry for the following the method. Select File >> Export

Registry Export

Select the location you want to save your registry then name it something like
“Registry backup DATE” and make sure you select the “All” radio button on the Export range so that the whole “Registry” is backed up.

Export Optons

Now that we have backed up the Registry, lets move to the size part : The registry file will be of .reg extension which will take almost 60MB on your hard disk Registry ack up sizeThis can be reduced to a very large extent by just using some achieving utility such as WinRAR or the default Windows ® Zip utility. (By “right clicking” on a File select the send to option and select Compressed folder)

Registry Compress

Now you can see that the compressed file will occupy only about 2MB(using professional tools) of memory.Compressed RegistryYou can always use your backup of the registry by double clicking on the saved version and selecting merge with Registry. But be careful because if your backup is before you installed some softwares, they may no longer work.

That is all you have to know before you start editing your registry.

Anyway I will not be responsible for any damage to you in person or your computer or the operating system that has been caused by editing your registry. You’ll be doing all the on your own risk. Still you can always contact me in case of your doubts; I’ll be here to offer you a helping hand in which ever case I know. Feel free to contact me.

QSM free screen capture software with image editing for Windows

The etrusoft Homepage now says QSM is free for home use but this was not specified on the QSM page and download page. Try your self

This is one piece of software that all would love to have. But this is an evaluation version by which you can save only 30 captures. Don’t worry there is a work around. Its more than Screen Capture, its a photo editor in itself. It offers more advanced features than the Windows built in utility the mspaint. The installation file is an executable of 1.5MB. After the installation I ran the program.

In the Capture menu you can see options like timer-activated capture, Direct X fullscreen desktop , Window Button control etc..Button and Tool capturing You can guess there functions right?
Now after capturing something it comes directly to the canvas and a save dialog is opened. You can save in 5 file formats. For image editing you are provided with functions like crop , select , add image , opacity control , besides there are the standard mspaint tools also.

When minimized it stays in the notification area. This is a great piece of software but I am forced to tell you some problems about it. The problems are given in the Cons section

Opacity and Layers

Pros :
advanced photo editing features included, allow layers, opacity control, plethora of options in capture mode, supports Saving in 5 formats, Opens files of 9 types including PSD. Allows ‘longer than screen’ window captures. Hot Key supported-F10(changeable)
Cons :
Error on Polygon Capture Whenever Polygon capture is used an out of memory error is shown. For small areas still the image is captured, but for large and complex areas it won’t capture. Also the memory usage can increase dangerously. Once on my system it rose up to 885 MB. Once the Out of memory Error occurs you need to restart the application to continue using. Won’t capture video frame from a player Window. Also when you try to open a large file (I tried a JPEG 990Kb 2000×3000 image) it crashes.
Specifications :

Mem. Usage (minimized) : 6MB
(Capturing) : 12MB(may vary)

File formats supported

Capture Mode :

Full Screen, Active Window, Active Window Client (Without the frame), Window Button, Control, Rectangle, Square, Ellipse, Circle, Polygon,Direct X (for games etc), Timer mode.

Price : $39.95

**Tips : when evaluation is over and you cant save the image try this either select the captured image using the select tool and copy (CTRL + C) then paste it in some other image editing software or take Prt Scr of QSM window and save it using other image editing software. **

Play video in image and as wallpaper

Have you ever tried to do a screen capture while playing a video. Press “print screen” key to take a screen shot, but eventually you are gonna end up with a black area where the video was originally present on the screen. DO NOT get frustrated that you can’t get a snapshot of the video you were playing, you can do something more amazing with that screen sot you just took! Read on if you want to do a little fun experiment with that image.

Demo Video

Here are the two videos I took. The Desktop Properties dialogue is opened to so that you can be sure the video is actually played in the background. The first video shows Kung Fu Panda being played as my desktop background. The second video has the same movie played inside an image file.

Steps Involved

Here are the steps you should do to get the desired effect –

  • Play a video player of your choice (VLC, Windows Media Player, GOM Player, WinAmp..)
  • Press the “Print Screen” Key on your keyboard. You can do it in full screen or normal mode
  • Paste (CTRL+V) into your image editing program such as Paint (WIN+R»mspaint)
  • Save the image to your hard disk. You can save the image as PNG, TIFF or BMP
  • GIF, JPG and low quality BMP does not work
  • Open the image using any of the available image viewers such as Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (Windows Gallery) or IrfanView
  • Play a video and maximize the video window Make sure you play the video using the same layer you used in step 1
  • Goto the open image and… Voilà the video being played can be seen in the image!

If you want to know why you can’t take a screen shot of a video played read the following section. Else skip to the next topic.

Video screen capture. Why NOT?

So why can’t you take a screen shot of a video player or a DVD video decoder by just pressing “prt-scr”? The reason lies in the method video is displayed on your monitor, or rather the video is send to your monitor. After explaining this a small trick to get a screen shot of video is also mentioned.

To understand why a video can’t be just screen shot, we need to know how a video is normally displayed. You would probably have heard Hardware Acceleration or Hardware acceleration layer if you are into computers or gaming. Hardware acceleration is a technique used to make video processing faster. In Computers the CPU used is a general purpose CPU that means it is not designed for a specific purpose. an example of a operation specific CPU would be that of a DECODER IC seen in a DVD player. The Rule Of Thumbs being anything running on specialized hardware is much faster that the same process implemented in software. This is one of the reasons why your top end Music player uses decoder ICs and produces better sound reproduction than your normal PC. (For the most simplified explanations read the wiki articleson RISC and CISC)

Hardware acceleration setting scan be changed through Display Properties dialogue.

Hardware Acceleration

Computers today use some hardware to decode the video rather than use software decoders. This is because of the high bandwidth required by video streams. So while your desktop (as a bitmap image) is saved in the computers video memory and then send to the monitor, the video you see is not! Video is processed by the hardware, then bypassing the video buffer (memory) and overlayed on to the signal that comes out of the Video RAM, going to your monitor. That is a form of signal mixing. To know eher to display the video a technique called colorkey is used to selectively replace a specified pixel color (usually near-black or magenta) with video content. A colorkey pixel present in the computer graphics video, will be replaced by video from the hardware accelerator.

When you press Print Screen, your OS copies the bitmapped data stored in the video memory to your clip board. When playing a video if you do prt-scr all you get will be the colorkey pixels instead of the picture shown on the video! That is why its all black.

Take a Video Screen shot!

There are several methods to take screen shot from a video. Here are the easier ones.

  • set hardware acceleration to none (see image Play the video in Windows media Player and press Print screen
  • Play the video in VLC player, take a screen capture using menu Video»Screenshot
  • Drag the video to Windows Movie Maker ( WIN+R»moviemk ) click play on the player at the far right corner. Pause at the required frame and goto Tools»Take Picture from Preview
