GMail has got an advanced Link editor, like TinyMCE

The Compose Mail page has got a new Link editing feature. Now you can easily Select the Link Text, Web/email address and check for the links validity all indide the mail editor. The link editor is similar in form to the one seen in TinyMC editor (at sourceforge.net/projects/tinymce/)

The linked text is then highlighted and some more options are shown to go to the link, edit the link and remove the link from the text.
