Why is my template selection page in Wordpress showing cryptic CSS

January 12th, 2008 Ajith Posted in Wordpress No Comments »

If you find a broken template selection page, like the one shown here, on your WordPress blog

Wordpress template selection page error

- don’t be worried. Last day while I was editing this blogs template I came across such a page. It didn’t take me long to figure out what was wrong. But until I found the reason I actually was a little worried. May be because I am new to WordPress.

So what does the above page mean. for this just look at the code shown. It is just the CSS from your current theme. So the error is caused by the style.css file in your theme directory. The CSS file must have a normal formatted structure as shown.

CSS file normally formatted

If the formatting and the new line characters are missing in the file after an edit the WordPress template page may look like the above.

What you can do is always edit the CSS file with ditors like NotePad++ or Microsoft FrontPage. It is better not to use NotPa. If you are on Linux you can use GEdit a wonderful inbuilt editor with highlighting and support for many languages and Scripts.

Unable to create a new category after the WP release 2.3.2

January 6th, 2008 Ajith Posted in Wordpress No Comments »

The non functional Categories tab - screenshotI am encountering a strange problem after I updated the blog to Wordpress 2.3.2 latest release. I cannot create new categories directly from the WP Write Post page. I don’t think this is a browser related issue coz wherever I go and whatever browser I use (both on Linux and Windows) the problem persists.

Does anybody else encounter such a problem. If somebody know how to resolve this or has found a similar problem on other sites please tell me.

Unexpected error on your webpage home - function.main failed to open stream

Warning: main(/home/exnol07/public_html/wp-content/themes/limau-orange-01/index.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/exnol07/public_html/wp-includes/template-loader.php on line 20Warning: main(/home/exnol07/public_html/wp-content/themes/limau-orange-01/index.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/exnol07/public_html/wp-includes/template-loader.php on line 20Warning: main() [function.include]: Failed opening ‘/home/exnol07/public_html/wp-content/themes/limau-orange-01/index.php’ for inclusion (include_path=’.:/usr/php4/lib/php:/usr/local/php4/lib/php’) in /home/exnol07/public_html/wp-includes/template-loader.php on line 20

The above error was encountered by me last day after I edited my blogs template files. I was on linux and was using Gedit to edit files. So what caused the above error. As it turned out the default Linux Access Permissions turned out to be the villain.

Linux default permission list on Konqueror

By default Linux applies the following set of access permissions to all files. Owner : rw Group : Forbidden Others : Forbidden when using Konqueror to upload your files. So when WP tried to access these files it returned an error because Wordpress was not the owner of the file. It took some time for me to figure it out.

So checkout twice when you are working on Linux and uploading files to your server

Wordpress (Version 2.3.2) is out upgrade now

December 30th, 2007 Ajith Posted in Wordpress No Comments »

Download latest Wordpress release in ZIP packageWordpress release download in TAR G-Zip package

The newest version of Wordpress 2.3.2 is out now. My Dashboard shows that it is only 4 hours old. There are some major fixes involved so download immediately.

WordPress 2.3.2 is an urgent security release that fixes a bug that can be used to expose your draft posts. 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations. Get 2.3.2 now to protect your blog from these disclosures. As a little bonus, 2.3.2 allows you to define a custom DB error page. Place your custom template at wp-content/db-error.php. If WP has a problem connecting to your database, this page will displayed rather than the default error message. For more detail on what’s new in 2.3.2, view the list of fixed bugs and see the changes between 2.3.1 and 2.3.2.
